Game Changing Book

Teaming With Microbes by Jeff Lowensfels & Wayne Lewis

This book was a complete game changer for me. It helped me to realize it's not just a clump of dirt but an entire ecosystem. Just like well balanced ecosystems are crucial above the ground they are even more crucial below ground.

When we think of dirt, we think of a few of the critters like earth worms, ants, and spiders. Put a speck of dirt under a powerful microscope and you begin to see that there is so much more going on under our feet than we realize.

According to the book a tablespoon of good garden soil may contain a billion invisible bacteria, several yard of invisible fungal hyphae (think of moldy leftovers), several thousand protozoa and a few dozen nematodes. These names might sound like creatures out of Jurassic Park, but if you’re a gardener they are crucial to helping grow healthy plants.

This may all seem very complicated, but the Authors do a great job explaining it so that anyone can understand. Whether you just have a small herb garden or have a thousand acre farm this is a must read for any gardener.

You can purchase the book from your favorite bookstore or here at Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
