ABOUT BROWNE ATLAS
Here in Des Moines, Iowa we solve two problems with one simple solution. The first problem we solve is food waste. We do this by using worm composting. We currently have several households that take their food waste and feed their composting worms with it. These composting worms aren’t your normal backyard earth worms. We use composting worms called Red Wigglers. It is believed that these composting worms can eat their own body weight of food waste each day. These composting worms can eat coffee grounds, banana peels, melon rinds and pretty much anything that was once alive. The composting worms are stored in custom made boxes. After the food is buried in these boxes it only take a few weeks to be eaten and turned into worm castings (a fancy name for worm poop). Once everything has had time to compost it is then put in a screener that separates the worm castings from everything else. Contrary to popular believe worm casting do not smell bad. My son said it best when he describe the worm castings as smelling like sunshine. This brings us to the second problem we solve. The worm castings are sold to local gardeners as a soil amendment. When worm castings are added to the soil the plants are healthier and more resistant to harmful pest. This helps reduce the need for synthetic fertilizer, insect killer, weed killer, and fungicide in your garden.
