Backyard Gardening: The Benefits
I’m still pretty new to gardening, but it didn’t take long for me to realize that having a backyard garden has so many benefits. Whether you do it for health reasons, financial benefit, or the pure enjoyment of it, it won‘t take you long at all to enjoy it as well.
When you buy produce at the store, it’s hard to feel 100 percent comfortable about what it is that you are buying. There are so many unknowns. Where was this produced? When did they harvest this? How far did this travel to get to me? What kind of chemicals did they use on it? Did they respect the land and soil while growing this? Does this have any nutritional value? When you have your own garden these questions are clearly answered. Its grown the way you want it to be grown because only you know the true value of these questions.
One of the biggest advantages of having a garden is that you grow the things that work best for your food budget. If you don’t have a garden you must adhere to the prices of in season produce or pay a higher price for out of season. Having a garden has allowed us to broaden our cooking style. It has allowed us to be creative and learn how to cook with the produce from our garden.
The greatest joy is taking a tiny seed and watching it turn into something magnificent. There is something magical about watching a plant grow. It is also an amazing teaching tool to your children. Most children don‘t even know how the food they eat is grown. I adore the experience of showing them the life cycle of the plant and also preparing it to eat. I believe you too will find the enjoyment of having your own backyard garden.
“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.”
— Alfred Austin
