Amber Waves of Grain

The Midwest;

They call it the bread basket of the world, with its amber waves of grain is able grow an abundance of food. It is capable of doing this mainly because of its fertile soil.

To understand where this amazing soil came from we must go all the way back to the Ice age...

Imagine: an ice glacier, possibly a mile tall, pushing its way south from Canada destroying everything in its path. Grinding and mixing minerals, carrying it miles down to its final destination to what we know today as "The Midwest". Some scientist believe this happen several times during the ice age. After the ice melted it left us with a perfect soil for plants to grow in. The land was able to sustain forest and prairie life which settlers later grew crops in.

Unfortunately we have taken this all for granted. We have allowed this wonderful soil to be washed away and allowed it to depleted of its once fertileness.

The good news is some farmers are seeing the error of their ways and are working hard to restore the land to it original state. They are using cover crops, prairie strips, and other practices to restore the land.
